Sunday September 11th
Mout Slesse
Chilliwack, BC
9am - 6pm PDT

Please join us on Sunday, September 11th for a hike to the crash site of Trans-Canada Airlines flight 810. This aircraft was a Northstar lost in 1956 after CFIT with Mt. Slesse. From someone who has done this hike several times before, you can expect this hike to provide good exercise, great scenery, a good history lesson, good 4x4 driving, and good team building. It will also give us a chance to pay respect to aviators who did not have the benefit of the technology that we have today.

We will be meeting early on the day of the hike at a supermarket in Chilliwack. That way if anyone has forgotten anything they need for the hike they will have a last chance to get it. The exact time and location will be determined about a week before the hike.

If you are interested in participating, please email info@canadianaviationpride.org

This year will be lead by Adrian Walker who is writing a book on the subject.

To do this hike we need high clearance 4x4 vehicles for the logging road that leads to the trailhead. If you can help provide one it would be greatly appreciated.

Unlike accidents today, much of the wreckage still remains at this site. This was a result of the difficult terrain and accident investigations of the time. Removal of even small pieces of wreckage may seem innocuous but the families of the victims consider it grave robbing so it is requested that all the wreckage be left as it was found.

We will be meeting early on the day of the hike at a supermarket in Chilliwack. That way if anyone has forgotten anything they need for the hike they will have a last chance to get it. The exact time and location will be determined about a week before the hike.

Removal of even small pieces of wreckage may seem innocuous but the families of the victims consider it grave robbing so it is requested that all the wreckage be left as it was found.

Trans-Canada Air Lines Flight 810 was a Canadair North Star on a scheduled flight from Vancouver to Calgary (continuing to Regina, Winnipeg, and Toronto). The plane crashed into Mount Slesse near Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada, on 9 December 1956 after encountering severe icing and turbulence over the mountains. All 62 people on board died, making this one of the worst airline crashes in the world at that date; it still ranks as the sixth worst air disaster in Canadian history.

Due to the remoteness and difficulty of the terrain, the crash site was not located until the following May, when it was discovered by mountaineers Elfrida Pigou, Geoffrey Walker, and David Cathcart. Among the victims were five professional Canadian football players on their way home from the annual Shrine Game between the East and West all-stars in Vancouver.

The remains are located in a highly inaccessible area and are protected from disturbance.

Disaster on Mount Slesse: The Story of Western Canada's Worst Air Crash

The trail is a great workout because the longer you go the steeper the terrain gets. 4 x 4 vehicles with high clearance are required. I have access to one and can take 4 people with me. Subarus unfortunately won't clear some of the spots on the road. We can discuss what day is best to go.

Canadian Aviation Pride 2013: Toronto

With a financial kick start and moral support from Jazz Aviation, Seneca College Alumni and Sky Regional Airlines and several private donations
Canadian Aviation Pride made its grand debut at the 2013 Toronto Pride Parade. The financial contributions from these sponsors and several private donors and many volunteers made our foray possible. Canadian Aviation Pride is extremely grateful for these contributions, Thank you!

The gay pilots, allies, friends and families gathered together and marched in the Toronto 2013 Pride Parade, Sunday June 30, 2013 as well as hosted a booth for 3 days during the festival,June 28-30, 2013.

Facebook Event Page: Pride Toronto 2013: CANADIAN AVIATION PRIDE

There has been a group of gay pilots and other aviation parties that came together to organize this event.

The Toronto chapter of gay wanted to participate in pride but the financial burden was a hurdle that inhibited taking part, until Jazz Aviation was approached. It didn't take much convincing as it was consistent with their diversity and community development policies.

The gay Toronto aviation people, and so on came together and formed Canadian Aviation Pride, to promote the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Questioning, 2-Spirited and Allies...in Canadian Aviation. A group where Pilots (private and commercial), Flight Attendants, Engineers, Mechanics, Dispatchers, aviation enthusiasts and other aviation minded people could get together and participate in the Toronto Pride Parade.

The snowball was rolling and building momentum. Members approached their respective employers and alumni. Seneca College Alumni and Sky Regional Airlines also supported our cause as well as several private donations. We figured out a budget and pushed ahead with preparations and planning.

Even though the group was entered as a community level participant and could not show any corporate logos or sponsors, our sponsors still contributed.

On the evening of Friday, June 28th, it all came together when Church street was closed to car traffic and the booth was set up. We were out there wearing our snazzy logo on white shirts.

We had our banners, table and such. We also knew we didn't really have enough money to cover all our expenses and so one member donated a whole slew of beads that could be made into necklaces. There were little airplanes, cats, dogs, bears, fish, and hearts in a variety of colours. Some necklaces were made up in the pride colour sequence. For $5 people would make their own necklaces or buy one already strung together. There were also hats. We even had some Trojan condoms to give away.

The items we sold helped us get into the black. Any proceeds will help fund future development of the group.

There were lots of people who walked by over the next three days. Some were interested in the necklaces and others who were interested in the group. We talked with lots of different people of varying back grounds. We helped enlighten people about it is in aviation and what it's like being a gay pilot and how it become better place to work and so on. We gave away business cards to people inviting them to check us out here online.

On Sunday the booth was closed so everyone could participate in the Parade. The Float had to be in set up position by 10:20am. The weather started off a little cloudy but eventually a gorgeous but not too hot day ensued.

We initially had plans for a huge float, I will keep that a surprise because if we can get enough sponsorship, we will use it for World Pride in Toronto for 2014. With our limited budget this year we had a pick up truck with a sound system decorated with flags and banners.
The sound track was Top Gun Anthem, Leaving on a Jet Plane, Learn to Fly, Come Fly with Me, Learning to Fly, Aeroplane, Danger Zone (Top Gun) and Fly away. At 1:20 marchers were mustered on Bloor street.

At 1:30pm the float headed up the road and the Parade volunteers helped to coordinate.

At 2pm, Like a zipper closing, the floats and marchers merged and proceeded down Bloor and Younge Street. Water balloons and squirt guns fired back and forth between the crowd and a few marchers. Cheers erupted as we proceeded down the street as hundred of thousands of people lined the streets. The enthusiasm from the crowd and marchers propelled us down Young. The typical route is west on Bloor Yonge Gerrard, but this year went further to Dundas.

With the music blaring it all seemed to come to an end very quickly, the marchers separated and the truck pulled over to ready it back for the road. An exhausted crew took a much needed break.

Everyone had participated in the Parade so the booth was closed. After a little break the booth was back open for a few more hours. Logistics meant we had shut down a bit earlier than the fair but we had sold out of almost all the 6 coloured pride necklaces and the crew was exhausted.

The event was declared a success and much exposure was gained.

If you have any photos of us, please e mail them to us. we would love to post them in a future photo Album here.

Now we are planning for World Pride in Toronto June 20-29th.
For more info on that event click here: Toronto World Pride website

Come join us, sign up online and be part of our group.

We are going to be looking for more sponsors and we may consider changing our entry from a community entry to a corporate one so that we may have sponsors and also include their branding on our float and booth. Want to march with us? We want you on board! We'll be serving up a non-stop afternoon of energy through downtown Toronto. We'll be equipped with a bigger sound system on our float with plenty of music, bring your squirt guns and prepare to get wet. This will also be a great chance to show off your individual company pride marching alongside our group banner.
